WordPress is fast becoming one of the greatest open-source platforms to use as a foundation, to build a website. Currently offering amazing flexibility and a great “Content Managed System” to allow the owner of the site to easily add content and newareas, and generally manage.
We often use this system to then build beautiful website designs for, giving the client the benefits of a beautiful bespoke website with a recognisable and easy to use admin area. As it’s original use was that of a Blog, WordPress offers great categorisation and dynamic blog and news areas easily, in fact this very section of our own website is powered with WordPress.
But it’s true power is in the open-source nature of the code meaning we can utilise our PHP coding knowledge to add much more functionality to the system, allowing a complete, update-able, constantly evolving, CMS for our clients. This same open-source nature, coupled with the leagues of eager developer fans, also means that there is a large support base for us developers, who are pushing the system to the limits of what it can do.
Another very powerful benefit of the WordPress system is the built in support for SEO and the way that it manages the internal linkings and URLs of the pages within the site. It is very simple to add clever URL building to the site, so for instance the categories and then page titles, become the actual URL of the pages within the site. This is very good for SEO, especially when employing a method of back-linking to a website. It’s always very important to include Keywords in the links you have coming to your site, and if these can be contained in the URL aswell, well, that’s the perfect backlink! So with a bit of coding knowledge, WordPress can be fine-tuned to become a brilliant example of a well SEO’d website.
So, if it wasn’t obvious to you after reading this, WordPress is definitely not just a blog! It’s an incredibly powerful platform and it’s flexibility is almost limitless.
