The use of infographics in website design, when successful, can contribute to better performance of a client’s business. So what is an infographic and what are the dos and don’ts?
An infographic is just that, graphic information; a picture made using design software enabling the viewer to see data more clearly. But we’re not just talking about a collection of symbols, you need substance there to tell a story.
The visualisation of data has moved on somewhat since the humble pie chart and bar graph, and although they may still have their place in simple analytics, the challenge to deliver a specific message to an end user falls to a graphic designer and in turn to us in web design, to assist clients drive traffic and raise their brand awareness with high impact information.
So what works? People respond to visual information far more readily than text, because it’s an easier process for them. Simplicity is therefore key; the message needs to be both interesting and understandable so they digest it before moving on to the next piece of information or they may lose interest and click away to a possible competitor.
Content is vital. Here we must produce a meaningful sequence of quality information, having quizzed the customer on recognising their target audience for maximum impact. Self-indulgence plays no part here – much as it’s tempting for the customer to push their product or service, nobody likes a hard-sell approach so information that is industry related or draws honest comparisons looks better when incorporated into their web design.
What you don’t want to do is dazzle the viewer with a gaudy array of colours or mishmash of fonts, which are more headache inducing than eye catching. So, successful infographics = data visually interpreted correctly at a glance. There’s a lot to be said for ‘less is more’.
