Responsive website design: Google loves it, but why should you?

As we mentioned last time, Google publicly declared their love for responsive website design, but they shouldn’t be the only ones.

There’s a whole host of benefits to responsive that will help you shimmy up that SEO pole and land a good place in online searches. Here we look at what those benefits are, and how they can help you

You’re a class act, so make sure you look it

Have you ever looked at a website on your phone, and… nothing happened? A picture loads up, maybe. Then a bit of wording that doesn’t make sense because half of it isn’t on the screen. Would you stick around? I didn’t. Their website may be great on a desktop, but it doesn’t look classy on a phone screen. Besides, people won’t hang about if they’re waiting ages (and seconds are ages in this game) for something to load up. You don’t want your online reputation to be tarnished by a creaky website.

Most people are now visiting your website from mobile devices

Just ask the 62% of smartphone users who have made an online purchase in the last six months. If your website isn’t ready to accept their business, you’re losing out on a lot of potential trade.

Duplicate content issues

Google Panda tirelessly trawls the net, looking for reasons your website isn’t worthy of a strong search ranking. For instance, if it spots a lot of duplicate content, you’re going to suffer. Non-responsive websites have separate URLs for mobile and desktop versions of their sites. Not only does this double the amount of time you spend managing two sites, but also risks the wrath of Panda’s mighty paw when it sees the duplicate content. Not upsetting Panda can only be a good thing for your SEO.

Google like it, and they’re the ones you want to impress

At the risk of repeating ourselves, Google are openly telling us they look favourably on mobile friendly sites. You want them to smile on you, as that will increase your SEO. And Google are about as smart as it gets. If they like responsive website design, then you’re wise to follow suit.
