Is human creativity under threat with the rise of artificial intelligence? The answer is no – but only if you choose to embrace it within your creative field. As an award-winning website design and digital marketing agency, we understand the fear but our creative team are not letting this new technology hold us back.
We truly believe you can keep the human spark alive while using this tool. Let’s take a look at how AI is being used in design, the differences between web builders and human designers, and how you can use AI to elevate design.
As there are many tools and platforms about nowadays that utilise AI for design, we thought we’d take a look at some of them and their features:
Wix is a well-known website builder and has now introduced an Artificial Design Intelligence (ADI) tool with an aim of further simplifying website creation. It works by asking the user a series of questions about their business, goals and style preferences.
From there, it generates a webpage or a full site with 3 different layouts to choose from as well as, fonts, colours and content suggestions. It is even able to create online stores and has the ability to add a personalised touch to these generated designs.
Figma is a user interface (UI) digital design tool used by many for website creations, product design and prototyping. It has a few AI-powered features that assist designers with layout constraints, component placement and brainstorming ideas.
For example, it’s Auto Layout tool automatically adjusts the layout of elements, specifically the sizing and spacing behaviour, so it aligns with any content changes. Also, it’s First Draft feature takes user prompts and transforms them into designs, therefore accelerating ideation without fully replacing the designer’s strategic decision-making.
Adobe is one of the most popular design software with applications like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign used by designers across all industries and agencies.
Adobe Sensei is an AI-powered technology integration for all these programs that offers efficiency and creative assistance such as automatic image-tagging, content-aware fill, font-pairing suggestions, layout recommendations and more.
In the context of website design, let’s compare the pros and cons of web builders that use AI technology and human web designers.
| Pros | Cons |
| Rapid Deployment: Individuals can create a website for themselves or their business quickly and with minimal technical or design skills. If you’re on a tight deadline, their basic templates can provide a speedy solution. | Limited Customisation: On the flip side, the templates they provide mean there are restrictions to creativity, so designing something truly bespoke is difficult. |
| Lower Cost: Using web builders is much more cost-effective, especially for simpler sites. | Lack of Uniqueness: If others are using web builders to create their website, the same templates will be used across multiple sites. This means there will be lots of similarities and brand differentiation may suffer. |
| Strategy Weaknesses: A website builder’s limitations also extend to strategy. There will be no UX research or CRO behind the design and there may be SEO and accessibility concerns that have not been addressed. | |
| SEO & Accessibility: To go into this a bit further, some builder-generated sites may not implement SEO and accessibility best practices. This could impact website performance, markup quality and semantic structure as well as the code behind the build. |
| Pros | Cons |
| Human Intuition: Working directly with you on your brand, audience, narrative and messaging means your website design will reflect this fully and ensure your messaging is on-point. | Cost: Choosing a website design agency will be more expensive than a website builder – however, the cost is justified with the planning, bespoke creativity, website build and support. You get more than just a website that looks nice. |
| Strategic Thinking: Website designers look at the bigger picture as well as how your site will look. They think about how it works, how it converts, how it scales and how it fits your business. | Longer Timeline: Web designers also take longer than web builders, however there is more research, feedback loops and attention to detail to ensure it matches your vision and goals exactly. |
| Brand Differentiation: By choosing a completely bespoke design, your site can stand out amongst the crowd, align with your brand and create user flows tailored to your brand. | |
| Technical Best Practices: On top of UX research and implementation, website design agencies will also handle SEO, accessibility, responsiveness, site speed and performance. |
As you can see above, AI can assist with design, however it lacks the full context, storytelling and strategic direction that human creativity can bring.
The “why” and “how” isn’t covered when using website builders and AI tools – only humans can answer these questions and implement the answers in a way that meets a client’s website brief. The human touch and ingenuity are essential for creating truly innovative and impactful designs.
As well as this, AI is purely based on learning from previous concepts and existing work. Therefore, uniqueness is not possible which is an integral part of creativity. Novel ideas, experimentation and risk-taking can only be captured by humans.
We’re not saying you should ditch AI completely when it comes to website design. The key is to harness its tools and collaborate with it while still retaining the human creative edge.
With AI, you can take ideas that have research and strategy behind them and use them as a prompt for AI tools to bring them to life. By generating ideas quickly and providing variations, these can then be assessed, critiqued and refined.
Also, in order to be able to spend more time strategy and refinement, AI technology can be utilised to automate repetitive tasks. From image resizing to asset exports, image tagging to alignment, efficiency can be increased in the website design process.
Once ideas have been brainstormed and options have been generated, web designers must apply judgement and ask the questions: “is this aligned with the user?”, “does it convey the right brand messaging?”, “does it follow SEO and accessibility best practices?”
Utilising AI’s suggestions and blending them with human creativity can customise them to client requirements. By using its creations as a base point and tweaking them based on the client’s brief, originality and uniqueness can be maintained.
AI in design doesn’t mean the end of human creativity; when used correctly and efficiently, it can amplify what designers do best. It can be used to your advantage, but ensure human touch us retained for strategy, storytelling, brand authenticity and technical quality.
