With over 2,000 website design agencies in the UK, we get why it’s a minefield trying to find the right one for your business and project. Some of the impacts of choosing the wrong one are:
Your website is an important investment for your business and shouldn’t be a quick, rushed decision. Choosing the right agency from the start is hugely beneficial and can result in a strong, lasting working relationship that can see your company go from strength to strength.
Don’t waste your time or money; here are the main things to consider in order to right the right website design and development agency for your business.
Rather than just searching for “web design agency” and choosing the first one that comes up without hesitation, take your time to do some research.
1. Assess Their Own Website Design & Build
2. Browse Their Case Studies & Testimonials
3. Find Out About Their Experience in Website Design
4. Check Their Digital Marketing Expertise
First thing’s first, as a website design agency, their own website design should be quite telling. If they can’t make their own website look good, then it’s not very likely that yours will either. It’s got to look clean, professional and show off their skills as designers as well as developers – but remember to look at the finer details too.
For example, if they were easy to find on Google, that’s a great sign that their SEO is effective. Also, if navigating their website is easy and you can effortlessly find the information you’re looking for, then they have taken User Experience (UX) into consideration during the design process. To assess the build, see how it looks on a mobile device, how different functionality works and the variety of elements they have used across the site.
If a website design agency doesn’t have a portfolio on their site, this is a red flag. Design is a visual thing and showcasing previous projects is one of the simplest ways to build trust with potential clients. Take your time browsing their case studies, not only looking at the style and quality, but digging deeper into what the requirements were and how they delivered. It’s also important to see if they work with businesses from different industries or whether they’re solely focused on one sector.
As well as their portfolio, testimonials can also give you a good insight when choosing an agency for your website project. Often quoted alongside individual case studies, you can also find them across social media or other platforms like Google. These will reflect their quality of work in addition to their customer service, communication, process, support, and more beyond the design and build.
Similar to testimonials giving you more of an insight into a web design agency, finding out about their history and experience in the industry tells you a lot too. It’s not just their design skills you need to be looking at, it’s their background and expertise that build the foundation of the company. How long have they been designing websites for? If they’ve been doing it for a long time, this is a good sign that they’re knowledgeable. It’s likely they follow web design best practices and consider SEO, CRO, UX and responsiveness when it comes to creating and building concepts. If they’ve won awards too, this is an even better sign!
When reviewing their website and their case studies, you should be able to identify what platforms they’ve worked with before. Whether it’s WooCommerce, Shopify or Magento, it’s important to consider scalability and flexibility to future-proof your online presence and shows their commitment to your long-term success. This is true for Content Management Systems (CMS) too; even if you’re not sure which one you need or prefer, you should make sure you have control and it’s easy to use.
Your website is an integral part of your marketing strategy, so another consideration to make is whether the agency has a marketing skillset on top of web design and build. Marketing knowledge is critical to website performance and success, so if they’re not showing any expertise in these areas on their own website, then it’s unlikely they’re considered within their process.
Every action taken when designing your website should be intentional and align with your marketing strategy. For example, if you’d like to pursue Google Ads, people will be taken to your site when clicking on your ad, so CRO is fundamental. This is similar for Social Media leading users back to your site, but the graphic design needs to be on brand across all platforms too. Your brand messaging needs to be consistent throughout your website copy and Content Marketing efforts but also optimised to increase visibility in search.
Doing your research is important, but there’s nothing like getting information from the horse’s mouth. Here are some important factors to cover in your first conversation with the agency.
1. Make Sure They Understand Your Requirements
2. Identify Their Website Design Process
3. Ask About Website Hosting & Ongoing Support
4. Determine Project Timelines & Costs
Strong communication is one of the clearest indicators of whether a web design agency is right for you. From the very first conversation, they should be asking thoughtful questions not only about how you want your website to look, but what it needs to achieve. A good sign is if they dig into your target audience, business goals, existing website setup, and any technical constraints.
While emails and calls are useful, there’s real value in speaking directly with the team either face-to-face or via video, especially early on in the process. If there aren’t many conversations prior to solutions, and the ones you do have are full of buzzwords and schmoozing, you should second guess their intentions. You should come away from the initial chat feeling listened to and understood – and this communication should continue throughout your project and beyond.
You might be able to find some information about this on their website, but it’s good to ask during your initial call with them too. A well-run website project always starts with a clearly defined process, so ask them to walk you through how they manage projects from start to finish. Plus, if your goals are mentioned and how their process ensures they will be met, you know they’ve considered your specific requirements and how they will be factored into their process.
If they clarify who’s responsible at each stage, this is a green flag. Also, if it’s managed fully in-house and all services are under one roof, this is an indication that the process will run as smoothly as possible. If responses are vague or generic, this is a red flag and could lead to mismanagement of complexity, timelines or issues if they arise.
Your website is an ongoing asset that needs looking after. At the start of your project, make sure to ask about website hosting and support options, so you are clear about what happens post-launch. Another tip is to ask about domain management, SSL certificates and backups early on, so you feel peace of mind moving forward.
Support shouldn’t be overlooked as it’s critical for keeping your site secure, fast and functional. Of course, you don’t have to host with the agency that designs and builds your website, but it’s often more cost-effective and simpler to do so. Particularly as they understand how your website is built.
Budgets matter to every business and a credible agency should be able to explain how they estimate costs, provide a clear breakdown of project stages and give a rough idea of timelines. Extremely low quotes should always prompt further questions, as it often indicates shortcuts leading to issues that can surface later down the line and additional expenditure.
Rather than focusing purely on price and deadlines, look at the value for money. Quality work requires thorough planning, design and development that supports growth, visibility and conversions. If you are worried about costs, ask how flexible they are around budget and what’s included at each stage.
Once you’ve done your research and had these initial conversations, it’s time to turn your attention to your instincts. What’s your gut feeling? As it’s the start of a working relationship that could last for years, you need to determine whether you would get on with them and use your best judgement.
The wrong choice can have real consequences, so try to balance practical considerations with how confident you feel in the agency’s approach. If something doesn’t feel right early on, it’s usually worth listening to that feeling.
