The number of people browsing the internet from a mobile device has tripled since 2009, and it is foreseeable that this trend will continue to grow exponentially in similar fervour through the next decade.

More powerful and dynamic browser platforms such as iOS and Android, now being incorporated as standard into new mobile devices, are supporting this growth, akin to what we have come to expect in PCs and laptops.

In developed countries, faster mobile broadband connections and cheaper data service are advancing this trend; in developing countries, cheaper mobile devices are fuelling the trend. Internet access via mobile devices in Kenya, for example, is as high as 90%, and 46% in India.

What can I do to ensure I am not missing out on sales when individuals access my site using a mobile device?

There are various things you can do to ensure that you are making the most from those who are accessing your site via mobile devices. Having a separate site design for mobile devices is one option. Another option, although not applicable to all sites, is having responsive layouts. This involves being able to detect what sort of device is trying to access your site so as to present your website in a fashion that is laid out in an effective and manageable manner to the user. User experience and ease of use are of prime concern when opting for either option.

Of course there are constraints for the mobile user experience that we have to address for your site to be just as effective over a mobile device, than it is over more static devices. To name but a few:

  • Screens are smaller
  • Internet Connection is slower
  • Text entry is more taxing

Why is it so important to act NOW?

To reiterate, the percentage of individuals accessing the internet from a mobile device (phone or tablet) was just 0.1% in 2008; through phenomenal growth this has increased 200%-400% per year to 6.2% today.

It is not unreasonable to estimate that 1 in 5 visits to your site will be from a mobile device within the next five years. If the mobile user’s experience is poor and he does not find it easy to use, he is likely to take his custom elsewhere. With mobile users already expecting this, the time to act is now.
